Bedford Lions Club will conduct “White Cane Days” Sept. 1, 2, 8, 9 in front of the Bedford Giant Eagle during store hours. The annual collection provides financial support for eye exams and glasses for low-income Bedford citizens. The Lions also sponsored a leader dog puppy last year and are planning to sponsor another one in the near future. A percentage of funds raised also goes to help support the PA Lions Beacon Lodge, a camp open to people who are blind, deaf or have special needs. The Bedford Lions sponsored a local person last year at the camp. Anyone interested in joining the Bedford Lions Club is invited to attend a meeting on the first and third Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at the Bedford American Legion.
Chestnut Ridge High School Class of 1967 will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at Henderson Park in St. Clairsville for a picnic. Chicken will be provided by the class; bring a covered dish and drink.
Corp. Isaac Rice, Circle 233, of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Bedford County Historical Society. The group’s members are female descendants of Union Civil War soldiers. The group emphasizes promotion of patriotism, education, and preservation of history. Bedford County Court Related Employees Association will host a public fundraiser featuring music by Clear Shade from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Sgt. Ellis R. Weicht & Robert W. Hartsock VFW Post 2088. Admission will be $5. The kitchen will be open with specials, and there will be a silent auction and more. Signing and sales event fundraiser will be hosted by Shirley Stuby at 2 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Bedford County Historical Society to introduce Stuby’s fourth book, “Jake, the Fire Company’s Mascot,” written to honor Melinda Stone and her battle with cancer. The story features Stone’s grandsons, Pierce and Mack. A total of 10% of the proceeds will go to the Everett Fire Company. Stuby also will have her other books available.
“Fire and Steel” medieval armored combat event in remembrance of Ethan Lingenfelter will be hosted by the Shawnee Valley Fire at 4 p.m. Sept. 16 at the pavilion grounds, 1485 Market St., Schellsburg. Tickets can be purchased on Venmo for $5 each or at the event for $10 each. Children ages 10 and younger will be admitted free of charge.
Frontier Patriots Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will meet at noon on Sept. 9 at Hoss’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant, 4308 Business Route 220, Bedford. All current members are encouraged to attend, as well as any male, 18 years or older who desires to obtain membership. To become a member, proof is required of lineal descent from a patriot who served in the Revolutionary War or who gave aid or support to American colonists during the Revolution.

Everett Sportsmen’s Club junior rifle and Everett High School rifle team sign-ups will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 and Sept. 6 at the Everett Sportsmen’s clubhouse. Boys and girls must be ages 12-19 or in sixth grade to be eligible to sign up. The registration fee is $45. Orders for sweatshirts with the club logo will be taken. At registration, the cost will be $30. All new participants must complete a mandatory two-day junior rifle NRA safety course on Sept. 23 and Sept. 24.
Replogle, Woodbury and NBC School District Alumni can take part in an event to celebrate school memories Sept. 30 at the former Replogle Grade School in New Enterprise. Socializing begins at 11:30 a.m. There will be a meal of fried chicken and trimmings catered by Kountry Kettle, entertainment by an NBC graduate, and a short history talk. Many memorabilia items will be on display in the former Grade 3 room. Anyone who has memorabilia to share is asked to bring them along. Cost for the school memories event is $22 per person. Dues of $10 are optional but help with postage and other expenses. Drive-thru turkey dinner will be served from 11 a.m. until sold out on Sept. 10 at the Breezewood Fire Hall. Cost will be $12. Proceeds benefit the Breezewood Volunteer Fire Company.
Claysburg Area Public Library has announced its upcoming programs. Canoe Creek Park will present the “Friends of the Forest” program at 11 a.m. Aug. 31. Children will hear stories and learn about special forest animals. “Learning @ the Library” will begin Sept. 7 and be offered every Thursday at 11 a.m. The preschool program includes learning letters, numbers, colors and shapes and singing songs related to the letter or number of the week. Bloody Run Historical Society will meet at 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Train Station Museum. Barb Miller’s exhibit at the library in September will be a continuation of the photos and articles on a section of Everett known as Tecumseh.
Claysburg Farm Show premium books area available at the Claysburg Area Public Library, post office and other local businesses. The book has rules for the apple pie, angel food cake, chocolate cake, and junior cookies, brownies or bars contests. The state ag department has cancelled egg entries this year, and feathers are not permitted in craft items, due to widespread disease. Exhibitors may bring items between 2 and 9 p.m. Sept. 5 and pick up items after 1 p.m. Sept. 9.
Family Hospice, part of UPMC, is offering free grief support sessions at the UPMC Home Healthcare/Family Hospice office, 227 Hospital Dr., Suite 2, Everett (rear of Pennwood Family Medicine), from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 7 to Oct. 12. Family Hospice bereavement coordinator Jennifer Cox is facilitating the group for attendees to share their feelings with others who are grieving. Space is limited. Chicken barbecue dinner fundraiser will be hosted by the Cumberland Valley Township Volunteer Fire Department on Sept. 4 at the fire hall, 4344 Bedford Valley Road, Bedford. Each dinner will include one-half chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, homebaked roll and dessert. Cost will be $12.

Spaghetti dinner will be served dine-in or take-out style by the Knights of Columbus of St. John’s Parish in New Baltimore from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17 at St. John’s Hall. Each dinner will include spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and dessert. Cost will be $10 for anyone ages 12 and older, $5 for children ages 5 to 11 and free for children 4 and younger. Bedford County Pink Ribbon Fund will host its annual Launch Party on Sept. 16 at the Bedford American Legion. The event will feature the Flying Ivories dueling pianos. Doors will open at 5 p.m., while food stations will open at 6 p.m., and entertainment will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased from any Pink Ribbon board member, at Founders Crossing in Bedford or Edward Jones in Everett. The Launch Party is a kick off for the events taking place during Breast Cancer Month in October.
Wills Mountain Archery 3-D shoot will be held Sept. 17 at the club, located along Tar Water Road, off Route 96, north of Hyndman. Registration will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost will be $10. Pennsylvania’s 2023 Make It With Wool Contest will be held Oct. 7. Registrations will be accepted until Sept. 5. The contest is open to anyone ages 8 and older and features five judging categories. “My Favorite Song” is the theme for the 2023 Pioneer Quilt Challenge, sponsored by the Bedford County Historical Society. Each quilt entry must feature a line or title from a favorite song and can be made in the quilter’s choice of design, pattern and colors. Include a brief summary explaining the quilt. Quilts can measure no more than 30-by-30 inches. Quilts can be registered from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at the society, 6441 Lincoln Highway, Bedford.
